international women's day

We’re thrilled to be celebrating International Women’s Day today!

Pura is so proud of the women in our team and a staunch supporter of gender equality.

Marked annually on March 8th, International Women's Day (IWD) sees women from across the globe celebrate other women's achievements, raise awareness about equality and fundraise for female charities.

It’s not a new event. In fact, International Women's Day has occurred for well over a century, with the first gathering held in 1911.

What’s this year’s theme?

Organisers choose a new topic to focus on each year, and the campaign theme for International Women's Day 2021 is 'Choose To Challenge'. The IWD website explains: “A challenged world is an alert world. And from challenge comes change”. So let's all #ChooseToChallenge inequality.

So wondering how to celebrate the big day at home? Here are some suggestions:

Get the kids involved

female family members

Historically, purple, green and white are the colours of IWD. Purple represents justice and dignity, green symbolises hope, and white means purity.

Why not dress yourself and the kids in the colours of IWD? You could also decorate the house in these cheerful hues or have an indoor picnic with green, purple and white coloured goodies. Explain to the kids why you’re celebrating IWD and you could tell them stories featuring historic female role models, such as environmental activist Greta Thunberg.

Donate to charity

This is your chance to give back to help girls and women across the world. Why not donate to a female focussed charity such as the World Association of Girl Guides and Scouts, the largest international youth movement dedicated to girls and young women, supporting over 10 million girls across 150 countries? A full list IWD charities of choice can be found here. Pura supports mothers living in hygiene poverty, who cannot afford wipes and nappies, through our donations and work with our charity partner to The Hygiene Bank.

Make (it) your day

International Women's Day belongs to everyone! Gloria Steinem, the world-renowned feminist, journalist and activist said: “The story of women's struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist, nor to any one organisation, but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights.”

Make IWD your day and do what you can to truly make a positive difference for women everywhere. Whether that be by donating to charity, educating your children, or simply showing some support or gratitude to some of the women in your life.

Take a selfie

Individuals and organisations have been invited to share #ChooseToChallenge imagesstriking the #ChooseToChallenge pose with their hand high to show commitment to choose to challenge inequality, call out bias, question stereotypes and help forge an inclusive world.

Whatever you do to celebrate, we hope you have an awesome day. And here's a big shout out to Mums everywhere!
