Have a spooky, scary, green Halloween

Read our wicked tips for sustainable Halloween celebrations that your kids will love.

#1. Dreadful decorations

It’s a great idea to keep and reuse your decorations from the previous Halloween but if you fancy adding to your stash, consider making (instead of buying) new decorations. As well as helping the planet, this is also much more fun for the kids. You don’t have to spend a fortune on craft supplies, instead gather material that you may have lying around the house. For example, you can turn used cardboard boxes into tombstones, and old tights stuffed make great spiders, while old string or shawls can be turned into excellent spider webs. Crafty!

#2. Vintage vampires and second-hand spooks

While making your own is better for the planet, it isn’t always practical. Instead, consider swapping costumes with friends or seeking costumes in charity shops. Vintage clothing apps like Depop and Vinted also offer Halloween costumes often at low prices. So, if you can’t make your own, buy pre-loved and donate you all costumes to charity for someone else to enjoy.

#3. Trick or treat

Instead of buying plastic buckets each year, use (and decorate) items you already own to make sacks or bags for collecting treats. Grab an old bucket, pillowcase, or bag and decorate inexpensively with paints, stickers, whatever you have to hand. They will be unique and can be reused year after year by your child.

#5 Ghost walk

Trick or Treat by walking around your own neighbourhood instead of driving to another destination. This has lots of benefits. It helps you get to know your neighbours and in turn reduces your carbon emissions. It's also great family exercise!

#5. Creepy compost

From party food to pumpkins, consider composting all organic matter and recycling other items used in celebrations come November 1st, to reduce Halloween's footprint. Instead of buying lots of party treats wrapped in plastic, consider baking with your kids. As well as being a fun autumn activity, you can make the goodies healthier. Click here for ideas.
