How can I help Sir David save our planet?

Sir David Attenborough

“We are at a turning point. What happens next is up to every one of us.”

This was the stark warning from Sir David Attenborough in the recent, hard hitting BBC One documentary Extinction: The Facts.

The landmark programme outlined the devastating damage humans have inflicted on the natural world.

Much-loved natural historian Sir David cautioned that the current biodiversity crisis has put one million species dangerously close to extinction, as well as putting human at risk of further devastating global pandemics like Covid-19.

Viewers took to social media in droves to express their shock and concern.

While the documentary was undoubtedly disturbing, the programme concluded by offering a glimmer of hope.

Attenborough cited how global governments joined forces in the 1980s to effectively tackle the destruction of the ozone layer by CFCs.

He also showed heartening footage of endangered mountain gorillas, whose population has swelled from just 250 in 1978 to over 1000 now, through co-ordinated social and environmental conservation programmes in central Africa.

“It just shows what we can achieve when we put our minds to it,” said Sir David.

“I do truly believe that, together, we can create a better future. I might not be here to see it, but if we make the right decisions at this critical moment, we can safeguard our planet's ecosystems, its extraordinary biodiversity and all its inhabitants.

“What happens next is up to every one of us.”

So what can I do?
