Plastic’s not fantastic – why we want a ban

We’re asking the UK government to phase out the sale of all wet wipes by April 2022.

90% of wipes sold in the UK contain polluting plastic. Plastic wipes take more than 100 years to degrade, outliving the babies they were used on.

They leave behind harmful microplastics – that’s smaller plastic particles – that pollute land, rivers and oceans contributing to carbon emissions and climate change.

And while we’re dishing the dirt, did you know that plastic even enters our food chain? Tiny plastics, smaller than 5mm, have been detected in seafood and human poo. It has also been found in the womb, inside human placentas, where scientists say it can cause foetal damage. Scary, eh?

That’s why we want a ban, and we want one now!

Don’t flush their future

Doing the best for our babies and our planet can be a juggling act. But simply by switching from wipes that harm the planet to plastic-free wipes designed to protect it we can collectively have a massive impact.

Plastic wipes make up 93% of yucky, sewer-clogging fatbergs. These grotesque structures of fat, wipes and other flushed items cause 300,000 sewage blockages causing floods and infrastructure damage.

Wipes are the third most common marine litter item in the UK. It’s estimated that 100,000 marine mammals and turtles are killed by plastic pollution annually and that by 2050, there could be more plastic in our oceans than fish.

Let’s protect their tomorrow, today.

No time to waste!

Just like the ban on single-use plastic straws, cotton buds and stirrers, we want to make the sale of baby wipes containing plastic in the UK illegal by April 2022.

But you don’t have to stop using baby wipes! We can phase out plastic wipes because there are so many affordable and high-quality plastic-free alternatives available such as those sold by Pura, Kit and Kin, Mum and You and many own brand label supermarket brands

Let’s ditch plastic for good and move to wipes that are purer!
