Our nappies our crowned Paper Pack of the Year!
Published on
We did it!! Pura’s new and improved nappies have been awarded Gold - Paper Pack of the Year - at The Grocer New Product and Packaging Awards 2024.
We’re so delighted. As part of our commitment to bring you the most sustainable nappy possible, we switched to easily recyclable, sustainably sourced paper packaging earlier this year. Here, we’d like to tell you a bit more about why our packaging is eco-awesome.
The journey to paper
We’ve been working with our suppliers to make the move from plastic to paper packaging from 2021.
To make sure we brought the best quality packs possible, there were a few challenges to consider:
- Hygiene and safety. Plastic film packaging – like our original packaging - is flexible, durable, and tear-resistant. It prevents moisture and light penetration. Could paper packaging adequately protect nappies during their life cycle from transportation all the way to your baby’s bottom?
- Design. Would Pura’s vibrant and unique branding look as good in paper?
- Sustainability. We needed to make sure that our paper was from responsible sources.
We did it
Eventually we found paper packaging that ticked all our boxes -safe, high quality, and sustainable. Take a look at some of the benefits of our paper packaging
- It is made of extremely durable kraft paper.
- The paper protecting the nappies inside, keeping them and safe.
- It is made from sustainable sources.
- It meets the strictest regulations for waste paper collection in Europe and beyond.
Our paper nappies launched early this year and have already won several other awards including this one! Wow.
Preventing waste – recyclable at home
Although Pura’s previous plastic film nappy packaging was recyclable at supermarkets, only c. 6% of this type of packaging is recycled. The rest goes to landfill or incineration.
In contrast, around 80% of all paper is recycled in the UK. We hope the new paper packaging makes it easier for you to recycle!
As well as this, paper is biodegradable, so if it does find its way into the environment it will not break down into microplastics or last for hundred of years in nature.
Sustainably sourced
The paper in Pura’s packaging comes from a renewable resource – sustainably managed forests which sequester carbon as they grow.
Plastic, in comparison, mainly comes from non-renewable oil. This has a huge environmental impact from extraction to processing and end of life.
