Are baby wipes safe for newborns?
Published onAs a parent, you want only the best for your gorgeous newborn, so deciding what to use and what not to use on their delicate skin can be a daunting to say the least.
When it comes to nappy changes, some people will only clean with cotton wool and water for the first few weeks of their baby’s life, while others prefer the convenience of wipes from day one.
These days, thanks to gentler formulas, it’s generally regarded as safe to use baby wipes from birth – if you chose the correct ones.
Your baby’s developing skin is so much thinner than your own and can be prone to irritation, so it’s best to use the most gentle and natural wipes possible. Here’s what to look out for:
Hypoallergenic
Choose wipes, like Pura’s, that are dermatologically tested and formulated to minimise the risk of allergic reactions. Those that have British Skin Foundation and Allergy UK approval can provides extra reassurance that they are safe and gentle on newborn skin.
Alcohol-free
Alcohol can dry out and irritate a newborn's sensitive skin so ensure that your wipes don’t contain any.
Fragrance-free
Artificial fragrances or perfumes can be harsh for a baby’s skin and may cause reactions. Though they won’t smell of roses, choose fragrance-free to protect your baby’s bottom.
Free from harsh chemicals
Ideally, your baby wipes should have as little additives as possible and be chemical and toxin-free. Pura Wipes are suitable for newborns due to their gentle, chemical-free formula. Make sure the wipes you chose don’t have any parabens or other nasties.
Soft and gentle
As you may have noticed, your precious newborn’s skin is incredibly soft, so try to find wipes that are equally pillowy and gentle. Pura Wipes are made from ultra-soft material, which makes them perfect for use on your baby’s sensitive skin. They clean thoroughly without being abrasive, ensuring your baby is comfortable after every change.
Wipes that work
While skin-safety is your number one concern, you’ll also need a wipe that works! Think gentle but effective in clearing up those poonamis! Look for wipes that are large and strong, with the right amount of moisture to clean up the biggest messes. Pura wipes contain 99% water and soothing aloe vera to get the job done.
Plastic-free
You’ll get through many, many wipes in the next few years! To make sure you’re not making a mess for the planet as you clean your baby, you may also want to look at how sustainable your wipes are. Check that your wipe cloth is plastic-free and that the material is sustainably sourced.
Wipes shouldn’t cost the earth
If you want to be thrifty, you could also think about setting up a wipe’s subscription – many brands, like Pura, offer discounts if you buy in bulk.
