Stay sane and enjoy the holidays with our parents’ festive survival guide!
Published onThe big day is almost upon us and although it is the season to be jolly, many parents might already be feeling more jaded than joyous.
If you’ve been run off your feet present and festive food shopping these past weeks, never fear. There’s still time to put some measures in place so you not only survive Christmas – you enjoy it!
- Let go of "perfect"
The Christmas photos, gifts, and decorations might not look like the ones on social media, but that’s ok. Parents face enough pressure year-round to do everything ‘right’. Don’t get caught up in the trap of trying to make the holiday picture perfect. It’s unrealistic and probably less fun that a sometimes messy but real Christmas.
- Accept help
Whether you’re doing dinner and having family around or travelling and worrying whether your baby will sleep over the festive period, remember that it’s okay to let others help — or take shortcuts when you need to.
Take advantage of the extra pairs of hands around to get some me time, or time with your partner. Babies' and children’s sleep can be disrupted over Christmas, but this is normally rectified in January when everyone is back into a routine. So if you need to skip your usual bath time don’t sweat it – try to go with the flow if you can.
- Don't skip self-care (even if it’s just a 10-Minute nap)
Take time out, whenever possible. A quick nap, a bubble bath, a cup of coffee alone, or a five-minute walk in the fresh air can work wonders in replenishing your energy levels, especially if you’re doing a lot of socialising or hosting.
- See the joy in small moments
See the humour in the chaos around you and try not to take things too seriously. Look out for tiny moments of joy - your baby probably might not cooperate for family photos… but they may charm everyone with an unexpected, cute smile at the dinner table.
Christmas isn’t about having everything perfect. It’s about being together (even if together means you’re both covered in baby sick but still smiling).
Wishing you a very happy and peaceful Christmas.
